Air commodore Joel Abioye
Please accept my sincere condolence on the demise of the AIT business mogul and a great philanthropist. Indeed, he has left his footprints on the sands of time. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
Dr. Umar Ardo
What a loss! I was very close to High Chief Raymond Dokpesi. Specifically, we’ve worked together on the Gov. Peter Odili for president campaign. He was appointed by Odili as Director General of the campaign while l was appointed Director of Strategy. He was a hard working, fearless and dedicated man. Certainly, a huge vacuum is created in Nigeria’s political space by his death.
May God Almighty bless his soul and reward his good deeds with mercy on the Day of Resurrection. May God Almighty also give his loved ones, all his children, wife, relatives, friends and associates the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. And may God Almighty bless us the living with faithful deaths when it is our turn to die. Ameen.
I extend my heartfelt sympathy over this personal painful occurrence even as I draw solace that Dokpesi lived a good, helpful and exemplary life.
Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha CON
My Heart goes out to the DAAR FAMILY. This is a collective loss for all of us and a hard hit one.
i am shaken to the core.
He was very supportive when i was governor of Imo State and was fiercely protective of the PDP as a Chieftain.
Dokpesi was a trailblazer who redefined Nigerian Electronic Media Industry.
His Convictions guided his actions.
We shall miss his Sterling Character.
Amb God knows Igali

Our Warm Tributes
High Chief Raymond Dokpesi: The Great Beyond Beckons to a Media Mogul
A powerful torchlight has gone off, rather untimely, after lightening up our world and illuminating the way for many people for many years. The media industry in Nigeria, and indeed Africa, is in sorrow. In spite of the significance of May 29 as Nigeria's day of transiting from one civilian administration to another, the day would also go down in infamy as the dark hour in which a media magnet, business mogul, political titan and godfather to many, in the person of High Chief Raymond Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi (Ezomo of Weppa-Wanno Kingdom) the founder of DAAR Communications transited to the Great Beyond. May his soul rest in peace.
The remains of the late media mogul will be buried in Agenebode, Edo state on Thursday June 22nd as a confirmation of the tragic reality that we shall never see the great man again. Such is life. We all have only a limited time to live, after which we must answer the home call and return to our maker. This is why it is incumbent on us to make the most of the limited time allotted to us before it elapses. Late Chief Dokpesi had lived for 71 years which was the time allotted to him and he had made an excellent use of it contributing to nation-building and touching the lives of many souls through his business empire, the most notable of which is DAAR Communications plc the parent company of Raypower, Faaji FM and the Africa Independent Television (AIT). The arrival of these media outfits as the benefit of the deregulation of broadcasting in Nigeria in 1992 has changed the landscape of broadcasting in the nation. The more the merrier, as the saying goes. Such a giant stride in the media coming from someone who had read marine engineering was a testament of courage and vision. The nation will be eternally grateful to the High Chief for his efforts in promoting press freedom and upholding democratic values in Nigeria.
A man of many parts, the late statesman’s engagements did not stop in the media; Chief Dokpesi also trod the political landscape. He was the political campaign manager of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur when he contested and won the Gongola state gubernatorial contest in the Second Republic in 1983. He subsequently managed the presidential campaigns of the same Alhaji Bamanaga; Adamu Ciroma and Peter Odili. Driven by the desire to strengthen his party the Peoples Democratic Party, Dokpesi contested for its National Chairmanship position and travelled round the country selling his candidacy to the state chapters of the party but lost to Uche Secondus in the election.
By taking the business of broadcasting to a higher level, DAAR Communications has been informing, educating, entertaining and enlightening millions of Nigerians both home and abroad. The credit goes to late Chief Dokpesi for his vision. While I had never met the fallen colossus in person but I have been hugely impacted by his brainchild. Programs like Political Platform; Perspectives in Politics; Focus Nigeria; Matters Arising; Moneyline with Nancy; Democracy Today with Ijeoma; Gender Agenda with Adaora; Sports Extra; Weekend Sports; etc. on AIT and Raypower have been entertaining and deepening my understanding of national and global issues over the years.
It is apt that the statement announcing his eternal journey said - “High Chief Dokpesi was also a respected and accomplished businessman, a pioneer in the media industry, and a philanthropist who dedicated his life to the service of his country and his community. His legacy will live on through the impact he made on the lives of many.”
Tributes have been pouring in honor of the departed media mogul as politicians, celebrities and other renowned personalities have been extolling the virtues of the late chief. The following condolence messages as copied from Facebook attest to this:
Former President Goodluck Jonathan wrote: “As a patriot and politician, he exemplified the virtues of loyalty, justice and service. A team player and bridge builder, High Chief Dokpesi played the kind of politics that promoted friendship, ethnic cohesion and national unity.”
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar wrote: “I am in a state of shock! As we say in Islam: from God, we came, and to Him, we return. I am in prayers and will continue in prayers! My everlasting and deepest condolences to the Raymond Dokpesi family. May God forgive his sins and grant him eternal rest. Ezemo, not on a date like this should you leave us!”
Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki wrote “Chief Raymond Dokpesi was not just a friend and a brother, but a visionary, whose contributions to Nigeria's media industry have left an indelible mark.”
Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki wrote “The Ezomo of Weppa-Wanno, Chief Dokpesi was an outstanding businessman and indeed, a media mogul, who took the bold step to venture into private broadcasting and broke the ground for many who came after him… A worthy ambassador of Edo State, Chief Dopkesi will be remembered for his knack for excellence and unwavering spirit of enterprise.”
Oyo state governor Seyi Makinde wrote “We are deeply saddened by the shocking news of the untimely passing of High Chief Raymond Dokpesi today. Chief Dokpesi was a respected elder statesman and member of the Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party.”
Bauchi state governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed wrote “High Chief Dokpesi was a pillar of strength and wisdom in our community, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations. In this time of grief, please find solace in the memories of his remarkable life and his positive impacts on those around him.”
Natasha H Akpoti Uduaghan, the elegant Kogi state politician wrote “Rest in Peace High Chief Raymond Dokpesi; the great iroko who revolutionized the media space.”
Nollywood actress Regina Askia Williams wrote: “How shall we - Nollywood in particular- honor Chief Raymond Dokpesi? He was indeed a colossus, from whose shoulders many of us took flight!”
A statement released by Hama Bachama and The Bachama Traditional Council said “High Chief Dokpesi was a global citizen and his departure is a huge loss to the nation, to Africa and to humanity at large. His numerous legacies will continue to impact lives for many years to come. Until his death, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi held the traditional title of ‘Lintu Bachama’ of the Bachama Kingdom, conferred on him by the paramount Ruler of Bachama Kingdom His Royal Majesty, Homun Dr. Daniel Shaga Ismaila, CON Kpawo Nomwe, Gilongo Diya Hama Bachama, on December 17, 2022.
In conclusion, my condolences to his family; DAAR Communications; acquaintances; and the media industry in Nigeria and Africa. Rest in power sir. You have lived a life of impact and service to your nation. May God bless your soul. There are no sufficient words for me to say 'thanks' for benefitting from DAAR Communications. While my heart is full of gratitude, I am however, pained by your sudden exit. So long, Chief.

PDP BOARD OF TRUSTEES EULOGIES HIGH CHIEF RAYMOND ANTHONY ALEOGHO DOKPESI
“Those we love never truly leave us, there are things that death cannot touch.”
These words from Jack Thorne describe the current feeling of the entire Board of Trustees of the PDP as we remember our dear friend and brother. “High Chief” as he was fondly referred to was passionate about Nigeria. He was an advocate of good governance, which was reflected by his constant appraisal of policies which favoured citizens and open criticism of those that adversely affected the masses.
Regardless of his social status, High Chief was the leader of the South-south People Assembly (SSPA) as a result of his deep-rooted interest for the people of his geopolitical zone.
An avid businessman, media mogul, maritime engineer, and philanthropist, High Chief was a lot of things to a lot of people.
Whereas our brother and friend has hearkened to nature’s call to the great beyond, he has left lasting legacies that death cannot touch. Forever and always in our hearts we reflect on these legacies while we mourn your passing.
We pray God grant High Chief’s immediate family, the good people of Edo state, Nigerians and his friends all over the world the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.
May his death bring peace, love, harmony and unity to our great Nation.

*Tribute to a Media Icon*
Once upon a time, in 1997, I was in Lagos and Satellite town to be precise also connect to CMS
and Ebutte Meta, then Ikoyi and Ikeja.
I never got tired of a particular TV Station, it was at that point in time I knew some notable
celebrated celebrities today as screen Divas and Gentle guys on screen. Especially the likes of
RMD, Kate Henshaw, Joke Silva, Liz Benson, Eucharia Anunobi, late Saint Obi, Ramsey Noah to
mention just a few. Thanks to my super mentor Ibrahim Lawal Billy Nyce.
Thanks also to African Independent Television - AIT founded in 1996 and launched on 22nd
November 1996.
In my tribute to this great Icon I came to the straddle and a bridge point like to say:
*Late Dr. Raymond A. Dokpesi* was an intelligent media Icon, one of a very kind in Nigeria and
Sub Saharan Africa, the first idea conceptualizer who brought up the first innovative and
Independent TV Station in Nigeria and Africa the AIT.
He was a visionary leader, a calm and simple fellow, a mentor, his humility was seen in him in
acts and deals. He so much believed in Nigeria and Her unity. Without any equivocation he was a
true leader across all divides, he was a true reflection of great and inspiring leaders if u ask me.
He was also a Democrat in its truest form.
By his determination and dedication to the media circle, Daar communication gave birth to the
AIT, Raypower FM and other frequency modulation stereos we enjoy today, they are the
pacesetters and it's a long way coming. History will be pleased with him.
Dr. Raymond A. Dokpesi shall be greatly missed.
Indeed he was an ICON.
On behalf of my family and friends, I say Rest on Sir, your legacy shall lives on. *Adio Sa Migo.*
May the family and my friends in AIT, RAYPOWER especially *Mrs. Samantha Manya* be
comforted as we share in this great loss.
*Remember, it is Life, People and Season.*

MY LIFE'S STORY WILL NOT BE COMPLETE IF YOUR NAME ISN'T MENTIONED
By Oloyede Oworu
Since May 29 2023, the sudden departure of High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi was like a
dream/nightmare that I will wake up from - but three-and-a-half weeks later, I have not woken
up from any dream and the events at Agenebode today only buttress the reality that our dear
Ezomo has truly left us.
So many things have been said in tribute to the late Ezomo, many of which were (ot are) evident
to many. His detribalized nature, his never-say-die approach to everything he laid his hands on,
his love for Nigeria and humanity at large - but what is the most touching for me was his genuine
desire to turn oeople's frowns to smiles.
That's how I became one of the major beneficiaries of his large heart.
He brought me into the DAAR family in 1999, after I left the banking scene, my father had just
passed on, was newly married and my life was beginning to lose direction.
Our paths never crossed until close to four months after I joined DAAR Communications when I
had reasons to be in his office and he said 'So you're the Oworu they're talking about'.
Fortunately for me, the stories he had heard were good because from then on I enjoyed a lot of
favour from him, which gave me the foundation and confidence to grow from the rookie I was
then to what I am today.
I could list the favours I enjoyed from Ezomo but that would probably require another write-up!
The story of my life will never be complete if your name isn't mentioned!
The good thing about this is that I am not alone. We are many beneficiaries of your good and
kind heart not just in DAAR, but within and beyond the length and breadth of Nigeria.
I only wish you had stayed a while longer to continue to touch lives the way you did.
But God knows best.
As you begin your final journey home, my prayer is that you will find eternal rest in the bosom of
your maker and the legacies you built and left behind will wax stronger and give your memory
the evergreen nature it thoroughly deserves.
Good night, Ezomo.
Dokpesi: The big masquerade leaves the stage
By Okhiria Agbonsuremi
I first saw Mercedes Benz limousine physically in 1986, when Raymond Dokpesi as the managing
director of Africa ocean lines( AOL) brought his friends and business associates, MKO Abiola,
Shehu Musa Yar'dua, Bamanga Tukur and Sunny Ade as the lead entertainer to Agenebode.
The occasion was a house warming ceremony and conferment of chieftaincy titles to him and his
friends.
My first time also coming into close contact with MKO Abiola as a student, the hope we all voted
for in 1993 that never happened.
Raymond Dokpesi later founded Badock shipping line after the collapsed of Africa ocean lines.
In 1994 Raymond Dokpesi took a bold step with the launch of Raypower Radio station followed
by AIT, this was the beginning of Media industrial revolution in Nigeria.
He became the Ted Turner of Africa media industry, the likes silvebird ITV followed his footsteps,
today the proliferation of media houses litters everywhere, Dokpesi is the pacesetter and
forerunner in the Nigeria Media industry.
Today the man EZOMO ALEOGHO DOKPESI goes back to Agenebode lifeless, everywhere is quiet,
mourning in Agenebode, Etsako East, Edo state and Nigeria.
We have lost an Iroko and a major Pillar connecting livelihood of supports to so many
dependants. Who will wear Raymond Dokpesi's shoes?
When you mention Agenebode to anyone, the next response you get is are you from Dopkesi's
town?
Raymond Dokpesi made Agenebode popular and Afemai people respected with the introduction
of a radio program*Afemai Ne'khai* we thank you Raypower Dokpesi.
A political juggernaut, tactical bridge builder, astute and dogged business mogul. You came, you
saw and you conquered.
As you journey home today, we ask God to bless your soul and forgive all your sins on earth.
Farewell and goodnight EZOMO ALEOGHO DOKPESI.

A short Tribute from Prof. Magnus Kpakol
High Chief Raymond Dokpesi was not just a media mogul. He was a giant in the political economy
of Nigeria. Indeed he was a bright shining light in the darkness of the poverty of Africa, as he
used his strength and whatever platforms and instruments the Almighty God gave him to
illuminate the way for people across Africa and all the world, sharing knowledge and all human
capital.
With the power of God, High Chief Dokpesi’s light that he has now handed over to his successors
will shine even brighter and never quench for the sake of helping to expand the glory of God.
He showed me great courtesy every single time we met. I remember when I went to see him and
his management team concerning my Show - Magnus Kpakol gvA, how excited he was for the
impact we would make together on the world as partners. He was glad that we had a story to tell
the world in a unique way. He was particularly glad it was a story on Africa. He loved Africa.
His life was cheerful, active and always positively deliberate with purpose and meaning.
High Chief, I wish you would continue to do your job here on earth, showing leadership and
courage, and at the same time displaying empathy and understanding for those who struggled to
stand up. But God Almighty has reassigned you and so we glorify Him for your life.
We thank you for preparing your family and successors well. I see them flying high just as you
imagined. So High Chief, so long, as you fly on in heavenly spaces with all the saints, in the holy
presence of our Lord, God Almighty.
Prof. Magnus Kpakol
Oloyede Oworu.
Yes, he’s gone and we should count ourselves lucky to have encountered his greatness, his
philosophy and mentorship. If I know him half as much as I think I do, he’ll be watching us all in
how we keep the legacies he left behind- especially his dreams for AIT. We owe it all to him one
way or the other. May his soul Rest In Peace.

My Tribute
DIEPREYE BERRIKI
Ezomo, my boss, my father and mentor
Spent a great deal of his life on earth impacting and investing in the lives of other people. He
knew he had a gift and didn’t hoard it but like a grain of wheat, he sowed it in the lives of others.
We are all witnesses to just how much fruit this noble investment has yielded.
DIEPREYE BERRIKI
TRIBUTE BY *“FRIENDS OF DOKPESI AT 70”*
Our *Dear High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi,* it is with deep shock and a great sense of loss
that we received the tragic news of your demise.
The news of your death came to us, *“Friends of Dokpesi at 70”* as a rude shock considering
your immense contributions to Nigeria’s quest for an egalitarian, free and prosperous society.
Your immense contributions to the media industry and other aspects of the Nigerian society
remain inscribed in gold for generations to see. You were humble, focused, committed and
always determined to touch lives. Your political prowess and dexterity as well as ability to unite
peoples of diverse ethnic and social backgrounds will definitely be missed. Indeed, your death is
certainly a colossal loss to your immediate family, the media industry and indeed, the entire
country in general. Indeed, words are not enough to express our grief.
The *“Friends of Dokpesi at 70”* pray that the Almighty God will grant your family the fortitude
to bear this irreparable loss.
May your soul and the souls of all faithful departed through the infinite mercy of God rest in
peace.
Amen.
MY Salute: To the Hero of our time: Ezomo, Araba, Founder, Dad.
High Chief Raymond A. Dokpesi
(The Àrè ona Kakanfo of Weppa Wanno kingdom)
The shocking news of your death took me unaware and am still yet to come to terms that you
are no more.
It’s hurts even more not getting to thank you in person for transforming my life for good.
You spent your life time extending your hands to all, and whoever is fortunate to come your way
gains favors.
Even though we wished you’d stayed a little longer, we still thank God for the gift of you in our
life.
You gave me all the opportunities and you impacted my life beyond my imagination.
You come through for me whenever you hear FEMI is in denial of anything without me coming to
you.
Like a father, you shower me with gifts and requested I name any thing of my choice whenever
you travel abroad.
Your unwavering love and support for me has made my journey in life more enjoyable than
anything I’ve experienced since my childhood.
Your mentorship has helped me to understand how much my life has improved and how far I’ve
progressed in life.
You believe every one has abilities and strength than they ever thought they have. Unworkable
was never in your dictionary.
As you have touched my life so you shall live in my heart forever.
As the world prepare you on your final journey to your creator, I pray God Almighty rewards all
your good deeds and overlook your short comings.
Rest in eternal peace my dear Founder.
Femi Omotosho.
My condolences on the demise of our mutual friend, Dr. Dokpesi. May God give family and
friends fortitude to bear the loss. From John Dara.
*EZOMO: THE SHIELD OVER US*
OMO'DION !!! (FIRST SON !!!) .That was High Chief Raymond Dokpesi's way of expressing his
sympathetic understanding of the multifarious problems which a first son, especially in a
polygamous setting would, rather inexorably, face in our cultural milieu. Although seemingly
immaterial, High Chief DAAR's perception, or understanding, of the divers problems which many
first sons would have to endure, was one of the major reasons for his unwavering support for me
and my career development ever since I met him, by Providence sometimes early in 1987.
By that year, High Chief DAAR had established *Africa Ocean Line*(AOL), and in just a year or so
of its establishment, AOL had become a major player in global maritime industry - the result of
Dokpesi's managerial ingenuity, resourcefulness and exceptional drive. At that time, Dokpesi's
establishment of AOL was, in business, the equivalent of the performance of magic, of some sort.
Considering, first, the huge capital outlay required and the near total dearth of the relevant
infrastructure to support a thriving maritime business, for example, dry docking facilities, many
even hard nosed investors regarded the maritime business as a no go area. Additionally, the
dwindling fortunes of the Federal Government's owned shipping line, the Nigeria National
Shipping Line (NNSL), was a major factor which discouraged any meaningful investment in the
maritime industry at that time.
Remarkably, Dokpesi was undaunted by these challenges To begin with, he did not believe that
any objective was impossible to attain. As a matter of fact, Dokpesi forbade the use of the word
*impossible* in any discussion about any task or project he set his hands on. All that is required,
he would say emphatically, is hard work, commitment and doggedness.
These are only a few of Dokpesi's ideals which account for the success of his venture into the
maritime industry. And I consider it relevant to summarize his remarkable achievements at this
juncture.
One, DAAR opened up the eyes of Nigeria and Nigerians to the many business opportunities in
the maritime industry. Two, his involvement led to the creation of economically rewarding job
opportunities for the teeming population of unemployed Nigerians, especially the youths. Three,
in order to ensure a thriving maritime industry in Nigeria, Dokpesi relentlessly championed the
call for the expansion of the relevant infrastructure which are required to galvanize the steady
growth of the maritime industry in Nigeria. And his efforts in this regard yielded the desired
result . Remarkably, Dokpesi's expertise in marine engineering was put to bear positively on the
expansion of the dry docking facilities at Snake Island, Lagos, as attested to by many. Four,
Dokpesi knew that for Nigeria to reap the desired economic benefits from the maritime industry,
a *cargo sharing formula* to check the near total dominance of foreign shipping lines and fly by
night operators, would have to be put in place. It is on record that Dokpesi came up with a new
cargo sharing formula that was specifically tailored to meet the peculiar needs of Nigeria in a
competitive global maritime industry.
But DAAR was not done yet. Next, he set his mind to work on a publication that would serve as a
respectable platform for articulating the peculiar needs of Nigeria, and Africa in global maritime
industry. This was the icing on the cake, as it were .And that was the altruistic consideration that
mainly informed his establishment of the *Africa Maritime Economist*.
Now, a brief mention of Dokpesi's work method is relevant here . He does not procrastinate.
Once he sets his mind on any project, he goes all out in the pursuit of the realization of the
project. And, as he made clear in an interview with the Guardian Newspapers some years ago,
Dokpesi would rather start out immediately in the efforts to realize his dreams, and would be
ready to deal with any collateral damages, if any, along the line; or words to that effect.
And so, after just about six months of planning and work to meet government requirements,
including registration of the publication, application for ISSN and so on, the *Africa Maritime
Economist* made its debut in October, 1988.
As with all.other business ventures Dokpesi set his hands on, *Africa Maritime Economist*
(AME).was a huge success; and its debut edition earned the commendation of many that were,
in one way or the other, involved in the maritime industry. As widely acknowledged by
stakeholders in the industry AME filled a void, and also held out a promise to galvanize the all -
round development of the maritime industry, not only in Nigeria, but throughout Africa.
Notably, the list of the pioneering staff of AME, DAAR Communications Limited, (as it was then)
illustrates Dokpesi's keen interest in the development of human.resources, and the appropriate
deployment of same in order to achieve set business goals. More specifically, Dokpesi was
concerned to create a respectable platform for all to develop themselves in
their chosen career.
Before the debut of AME in 1988, I had been around/ working with Dokpesi for about a year,
howbeit informally. DAAR Communications Ltd. shared the same office building with AOL; 5,
Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos. It was an opportunity for me to learn; and I learnt a lot - about
Dokpesi, the man and his style of management, and so on. And who wouldn't learn? After all,
and as everyone would readily attest to, any time spent close to Dokpesi was learning time. Or,
to put it somewhat differently, working with Dokpesi is equivalent to being in the classroom,
more or less
High Chief Dokpesi considered me intellectually and professionally fit to head the operations of
AME, and did not hesitate to appoint me as Editor - in - Chief of the publication, right from the
planning stages.
The board members were: Fatai Bello Omeiza, chairman; Dr. Patrick Utomi; Captain Adamu Biu;
Muyiwa Ogunlela (Mrs ); Mallam Inua Ellams; Austin Mamedu; Sylvester Akhidime (Editor - in -
Chief).
As a mark of the high rating of AME by the reading public, when the NNSL vessel, *River Gurara*
sank near Lisbon in 1989, Nigerians looked up to AME for a detailed and informed report, even
though the incident was headline news throughout the maritime world. That was when the
journalist in Dokpesi came to the fore . AME's report,.scripted by Dokpesi himself, put a finger on
the objective cause of the incident - lubrication oil failure. Appropriately, the cover headline of
that edition of AME was *LUB OIL FAILURE*; and it was couched by Dokpesi himself.
Before I left AME, DAAR Communications ltd., later that year, Dokpesi had already initiated
moves to affiliate AME to the *LLOYD'S* of London - widely acknowledged as leaders in maritime
publishing globally.
Copying Dokpesi's style, I worked assiduously on my project: *COMPANION PUBLISHERS LTD.* Of
course, I discussed my plans with Dokpesi and he gave his blessings.
Unfortunately, the project nosedived soon after its promising take off. This " First son" cannot
thank High Chief Dokpesi enough for his support throughout the long period he nursed the
emotional and physical pains resulting from that career accident, as it were.
Then came 2013. Chief Dokpesi asked me to come over to see him in Abuja; and, thoughtfully, he
paid for the flight.
At a point during my discussion with him, I said that my preference is to leave Nigeria, if I had my
way. At that, Dokpesi turned his attention away from me. I knew I had goofed. Dokpesi would
never want me to buckle, or throw up my hands in total surrender to problems. When he
returned his attention to me moments later, he started with jokes, apparently to put me at ease.
"First son", he added half in jest and half in sympathetic understanding of my pains, "you do not
run away from your problems; you confront them headon. And the way to go is hard work and
prayers". I will never forget those words. Till this day, the import of those words, together with
Dokpesi's love and concern, is the major reason
for my unwavering determination to soldier on still.
At the end of the day, High Chief Dokpesi offered me a job in AIT. The rest is now history.
It is difficult to tell the whole story of my highly rewarding relationship with High Chief Raymond
Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi in a short piece as this. So, finally for now, may I highlight only some
three aspects of his admirable leadership qualities which, like a magnet, drew the people to
Dokpesi.
One, once you earn Dokpesi's trust and confidence, he will always support your endeavours. His
kind reminiscence of my relationship with him during his last meeting with the staff of the news
room recently, corroborates this opinion.(As a footnote, I am happy that I did not disappoint his
expectations of me, going by his kind words on that occasion).
Two, in the event of charge(s) against anyone - colleague or subordinate, count on Chief
Dokpesi to examine the *case behind the charge sheet* And, to be sure, Dokpesi knows. more
about the case behind the charge sheet than both the accuser and the accused.
Three, Dokpesi is a shield over the people; and he is ever ready to provide his wide shoulders for
all to lean on, in times of adversity. Surely, he, the name *DOKPESI* will continue to be a shield
over us; because anyone that lives in the hearts and minds of the people, does not *die*, in the
ordinary sense of the word. Dokpesi lives on!!
For now, good night my big boss, my mentor, my brother, my friend and earthly shield. Thank
you for your tireless support for this "first son".
By Sylvester E. Akhidime.
To the Nigerian Muslims, he was one of us. A brother, a great friend, a wonderful associate and a
partner in origress.
He encouraged and allowed broadcast of every Muslim and Islamic event in Nigeriaand outside,
Including the Hajj excercise in Saudi Arabia. Ramadan Tafseer, free call to prayer five times a day.
Even free advert of the SCIA during Corvid 19.
His social capital has no boundaries.
Ramadan would come and he was fasting with us. He would even ask us to join him in breaking
the fast.
He was sending our technical crew to broadcast live, Jummat prayers in Maidurguri, Sokoto,
Kano, Kaduna and many other places, and was not asking for sponsors or any Kobo.
Intellectually, he was sound beyond his degrees. Just bring about any topic, most especially,
Islam. He would lecture you about the sharia, theology and even Islamic history. Every time and
every day, he wanted to learn and also share ideologies.
When people learnt of what he has been doing for Islam and, muslims, many started asking
questions as to was he a Muslim? A question whose answers I was not interested in knowing, or
answering. Good heart and good works is what Allah SWT is intrealeted in.

YOU WERE
A force of nature.
A raging storm. A rugged and dogged
creature who wondered through the
tangled forest of life.
Those who dared to tame you were
scared of your powers. Powers of your
humility and forgiving spirit.
Yes, they were scared of how you make them feel. They were scare of what you represent. You
never allowed them to hold you back.
The great Ezomo of the universe
A trail blazer,
A legend of our time
An Iconic bridge builder
A connecting rod
A great philanthropist
A detribalized Nigerian
The world stands still on your exit
Your type are rare to find.
It will take hundreds of years to get your replacement. Not in this generation. We may not know
what we have lost.
Come on death!
The unchangeable change.
If we were born to die, why born at all?
If our today is not too guaranteed, why
thinking of the uncertain tomorrow?
Come on death
If you were mortal, you would have been confronted with bordering questions such as these.
You are not demonic. Not at all.
You are just the unchangeable means to devastate the gullible mortals.
The unquestionably God has a purpose in all He does. It is well.
Some pains leave us voiceless.
My heart hurts.
I never thought I could cry
until we lost you Uncle Ray to the cold hands of death.
You are missed every moment
of every day
My mind still talks to you and my heart still looks for you. But my soul knows you are at peace
with your creator.
The Raymond Dokpesi Center for Media
Development a non profit organization which I belong, has for over fifteen years been agitating
and fronting that, every 15th of October should be declared as a day for PRIVATE MEDIA
BROADCAST to immortalize High Chief Raymond Dokpesi for blazing the trail. If this is don, his
unquantifiable legacies will stand the test of time.

I write on behalf of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, FCT Chapter, to express our
sincere condolence to the management and staff of the DAAR Communications on the death of
your CEO, Late Engr. Raymond Dokpesi, who passed on to glory on Monday, 29th May, 2023.
Late Engr. Dokpesi was an exemplary leader and a global icon who contributed immensely to the
growth and development of our country, especially, in the media space where history will
remember him for taking the bold step to establish the first private television station in Nigeria.

Responsibility (CSR) across various strata of the society. He was a philanthropist who offered his

As we attend the Funeral Ceremony @ 4pm today Monday the 19th June 2023 at ICC,
May the Good Lord we serve
*Ezomo, High Chief, Engineer, Raymond Dokpesi, A Philanthropist.*
I am yet to come to terms with the news of your demise on Monday, 29th May, 2023. A
detribalized nigerian who associated, related, accommodated and above all helped and
established people irrespective of their tribe, class or creed. The Almighty God used you through
the platform you provided; DAAR Communications PLC, to take me to the level I am today. For
someone like me whom after losing my sight some years ago thought that the end of the world
had come and that there was no need to remain alive on this planet earth at one point in time to
later not only being a public figure and on-air personality and also to have travelled about seven
countries across the world, today I have a beautiful wife and four lovely children including other
dependants, you can apparently understand what you meant to me and my family. You are what
we describe in Igboland as Omere ora and Ochiro ozuo. A man who started employing physically
challenged individuals even before they signed it into law of certain percentage for people living
with disability by the federal government. Majority of us who are physically challenged in this
establishment are not even from south-south or Edo state let alone Agenebode. No wonder the
Almighty God called you home on a special and significant day in the life of our country Nigeria;
talking about democracy day on May 29th. As a mortal man, you were not infallible but your
generosity, philanthropism, kindness as well as tolerance and acceptance would definitely open
the doors of heaven for Almighty God to embrace you. Though you the iroko has fallen
physically, you would continue to live on in our hearts. May the Almighty God grant your soul a
great repose and as well grant the entire members of your family and us the entire members of
DAAR family the fortitude to bear this great loss.
Ezomo, High Chief, Big Daddy, Rest in Peace, Adieu.

MY ELEGY ONTHE SAD PASSAGE OF HIGH CHIEF RAYMOND ALEOGHO AYAOGHENA DOKPESI,
Ph.D, OFR
I am a very sad man as I write this.I am completely devastated by the ugly news of the rather
sudden death of my elder brother, friend, kinsman, soul mate and confidant,HIGH CHIEF
RAYMOND ALEOGHO AYAOGHENA DOKPESI. Dokpesi had called me on WHATSAPP at about
1.30am THIS MORNING [ 9th May, 2023 ). He called me to discuss friendship, brotherhood and
take advice on sundry legal matters. He exuded his usual happiness, vibrancy, and
gusto, notwithstanding that he has had some health challenges for some time. His voice was
quite rich, steady and filled with laughter,as we taunted and bantered with each other,as we
were want to do whenever we encountered
each other. We exchanged chats and spoke up to about 1.50am this morning. So when Chief
Tony Akiotu ( GMD, DAAR Communication) and Senator Francis Alimhikhena called me to break
the sad news of his death from the very hospital where he was said to have been rushed to, I
could not believe my ears.It took another communication from his first son, Raymond
Dokpesi,Jnr to melt my lethargic world of disbelief. Was the Ezomo of Weppa Wanno Kingdom's
call to me a FAREWELL from him? Did he have the premonition of his imminent death? I do not
know.Gosh!!! One thing is clear to me as I grieve:Weppa- Wanno, Etsako,Afenmailand,Edo
State,Nigeria, Africa, the black race, and indeed the whole world, has lost an unforgettable and
uncommon shining star and gem. At a mere 71, Dokpesi lived a life of nobility; a life wholly
dedicated to the service of God and humanity. He impacted the most vulnerable through his
many philanthropic works. In the maritime world,he stood tall and resplendent, earning a Ph.D in
Maritime Engineering. He was to become the nullus secondus of the media world where he
became a Czar, the Ted Turner of African broadcasting. Dokpesi indeed pioneered and blazed
private independent broadcasting of television and radio in Nigeria and Africa, establishing
Raypower and the African Independent Television ( AIT ).It was unheard of that a single
individual could challenge and break decades of government's dominance and monopoly of
information through radio and television. But,the Araba of Oshoroland and Oghierumhoa of
Weppa Wanno Kingdom did just that. In politics, Dokpesi was a master strategist and iconic
tactician. His name vibrated and revibrated across Nigeria for decades in Nigeria's political
firmament. He epitomized the soul and spirit of DAAR.Not many Nigerians know that DAAR is
actually a reversed acronym of his name- RAYMOND ALEOGHO AYAOGHENA DOKPESI ( RAAD
).The Ezomo came.He saw. He conquered. He ran a good race. He finished well. Most significantly,
he died on DEMOCRACY DAY- May 29,2023,because he epitomized DEMOCRACY and democratic
practice. At the 2005,2009 and 2009 National Conferences, Dokpesi rolled out the entire DAAR
Communications facilities to drive the conferences, becoming the linchpin of the conferences.
May God grant this legend and collosus eternal repose of his great soul until we meet to part no
more.tseee, Itseee lagi Itseee .
He meant so many things to many people who were privileged to have come in contact with him.
To me,
he was the perfect definition of a selfless being, who rarely missed the opportunity of
making impacts in the lives of those he came across, even within the shortest period of time.
On one of those occasions for instance, Ezomo was well aware that I and another colleague had
been well mobilized to deliver a task for and with him somewhere in the southeast, yet he
ensured we were taken care of from his pockets on our arrival. To cap it all, he put us on the
same aircraft back to Abuja after the assignment when we could have comfortably found our
way, our own way or better still, joined his entourage back to Abuja (the roads were very safe at
the time). On arrival to Abuja, he invited and also "blessed" us in his house. He was truly one of a
kind, a special breed, compassionate to a fault.
I'm yet to see a person who values relationships the way he did; one who also manages
seemingly difficult situations the way he did.
We were blessed to have had him around through the period God permitted.
May his loving and adorable soul continue to rest in Peace, Amen.
*A Glowing Tribute to a Pacesetter, a Trailblazer and a Generational Icon*
Fresh from my Youth Service, I kicked off my working career on this veritable platform
generously provided by the Ezomo himself, under one of his finest right-hand man, Felix
'Mammode Akugha.
I will never forget the beautiful experience provided by this great Nigerian, and African media
colossus.
There's nothing I want to say as a tribute, that hasn't been said here already, the outpouring of
encomiums cannot really capture the greatness of the High Chief himself. He landed Nigeria
firmly on the moon when he launched the very first privately owned TV station in Nigeria.
As we say goodnight, you gave a couple of us that golden platform that paved the way for us
today wherever we mention that name AIT, doors are flung open, you gave us a celebrity status.
I am glad our path crossed. Sure! I'm a product of your daring spirit.
_Farewell High Chief_
_Journey well Ezomo_

I am one of those lives you impacted, and I celebrate your blazing legacy.

HIGH CHIEF ALEOGHO DOKPESI: SAINT OUT OF BONDAGE
…. By Clement Afe Afemikhe
Sometime ago, in mid 2001, I had travelled from Kano to Abuja to honour an appointment with a
certain High chief Raymond Dokpesi. Once I got to the premises of the Sheraton hotel and
Towers now known as Abuja Continental Hotel, my friend, late Commander Moses, who's my
link man to the owner of Raypower FM immediately ushered me to the 8th floor which was the
Towers.
There I sat, calmly but uneasily on the sofa, my heart pounding, my head aching with a longing to
behold the face of the man whom I was scheduled to meet for an employment opportunity.
From the unwindowed windowpane of the Towers I beheld clearly the tender Abuja sky (I was
visiting the place for the very first time) and there was this surge of anticipation; the hope of
getting which causes a man’s mind to race recklessly against the winds of life.
Since I arrived Abuja from my base in Kano earlier that afternoon, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi
had been the subject of my discussion with my host, Mr. Commander Moses, on whose shoulder
I was standing to get through to the Agenebode High Chief and owner of Raypower FM in Lagos.
There I sat, still, lost in thought, every of my suffocated breath pulling me towards the 'mystery'
man I had been so confident will be my Daniel in the Lion’s den, my David who slayed Goliath,
my Joseph made Prime Minister in Egypt by Pharaoh, my Samson who killed thousands of the
philistines with a Donkey jaw bone and the Messiah to break the jinx of my joblessness many
years after graduating from the university. I had been without a paid job for a rather lengthy and
frustrating period.
Yet, I sat there, stretching out on the couch with subdued comfort and admiring the beautiful
Abuja landscape, one could feel the wind whizzing through the few trees around the hotel.
Moments later, the big man walked into the lounge majestically, looked at me fixedly and smiled.
Poor me, there before me stood the big man, splendid, jovial, radiating all the luster of unsullied
humanity. I dared to stare vaguely at the imperial man in the manner of one who has seen some
nameless wonder drop out of the sky at his feet.
It's very glaring that the man standing before was rich yet very humble, sublime yet inquisitively
engaging; he was just a strange personage enrobed in simplicity, love and a composure
undefined, and I dare say a man destined to work his way through millions of people, especially
the wretched of the earth till they drink from the prosperity cup.
The regal and very audacious and fascinating personage was the very HIGH CHIEF RAYMOND
DOKPESI, the founder and Executive Chairman of DAAR Communications Limited as it was then
known! High Chief Raymond Dokpesi all at once caught my wondering glance, passion glowed in
his face and he smiled and warmed up to me with a conversation. However, I got my first
shocker when I arose from the couch to greet the High Chief: behold, it's the High Chief Raymond
Dokpesi himself who did the most unexpected as he'd moved towards me and greeted me very
warmly, familiarly and courteously with that sort of piquancy very uncommon among money
bags in our part of the globe.
As though we've crossed paths previously, High Chief Dokpesi immediately threw a barrage of
questions at me and wondered why I, his own Etsako brother and "a very brilliant writer and
journalist" would not want to work for his media outfit in Lagos.
As he spoke on that fateful afternoon, I felt the ‘messianic’ deposits in the BIG BROTHER as he
called himself that fateful day. Without ado, the High Chief Raymond Dokpesi teased me into
accepting to be part of his DAAR family.
I was astir in his employment offer. I came alive!
His words awoken hope in my once troubled recesses, I felt a spontaneous healing from my
many barren years of unemployment and hopeless job hunt across Nigeria. I immediately felt the
pestiferous nuances of my despair melting away slowly like some ice cube under the sun in the
Sahara desert, giving way to a brighter promise of real identity.
The next time I had the privilege of meeting with High Chief Raymond Dokpesi at the same
Sheraton hotel and Towers, about two months after the first meeting, the humble big man was
so sorry about the mix ups from his office in Lagos that had delayed or prevented me from going
over to the Alagbado headquarters of his media conglomerate to take part in an aptitude test
and interview.
I yet remember vividly that hot afternoon day at the Sheraton Tower's lounge, how, in company
with some of his associates, including my friend, late Commander Moses, High Chief Dokpesi had
pulled me by the hand to his hotel suite and pointed me to a corner of the room where some
national newspapers were kept:
“My brother, I have been reading your articles and News reports in some of these national
dailies. The stories carrying your bylines in the titles on the stable of GARDEN CITY NEWSPAPERS
LIMITED, Port Harcourt, Rivers state, are quiet good and sound. How come you never thought of
working for your own brother? I'm not happy with you. Don't you know that the radio and TV
stations are our own? Please oga, you are not going back to Kano but Lagos after this meeting,
ok?"
Pronto my dear BIG BROTHER and benefactor High Chief Raymond Dokpesi brought out his red
biro and signed across my documents which I usually carried on me wherever I went being a job
seeker.
His words read in part, "I am highly interested in the services of this man..."
“Congratulations, my brother Clement Afemikhe, you have the job and I will see you Lagos next
week!”
Hmn, it's like a movie to me that afternoon but it was all real ...
That was vintage high Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the Ezomo of Weppa.
Another shocker was that besides offering me employment, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, my
liberator had also pulled out wads of crispy naira notes from his briefcase and handed over to me
as my transport fare to Lagos! Wonderful! I couldn't believe what was happening to me. His act
of kindness instantly made me to realize that all men were one stream, one flow through the
rocks of life.
High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi wiped my tears when I was crying in the falls and
whirlpools of life, he washed me clean when I yet twisted and turned the pebbles of
unemployment and a bewitched job hunt.
True, in the life of any human, there comes a time when being so beaten anumb one's compelled
to look up to the sky above in the hope of eliciting the comfort of the stars, the moon, and the
sun; it therefore is a catastrophe unimaginable not to find any of these up in the sometimes dark
and bright sky. Fortunately for me, I found a Raymond Dokpesi up there in the sky of my
struggles for survival. Thank you sir, great Ezomo.
Ever since I discovered High Chief Raymond Dokpesi in 2001, I have personally continued to
reference him, and wished that most other men of affluence would queue behind him in the
hope that good nature and entrepreneurial energy and devotion to people would help to
catapult the millions of slaving youths in Nigeria to the pinnacle of their dreams and endeavours.
The over two decades I have worked in your big DAAR farm have been a progressive match
decorated with memorable emblems: Ezomo engaged me as CLEMENT AFEMIKHE but through
our labour together on your farm, I became known across continents as AFE AFEMIKHE.
You gave me a new name, a new identity; my real identity as a writer and professional journalist.
Hmn, thank you sir!
Whatever I have done, doing now and would do in future in the big farm, DAAR
COMMUNICATIONS PLC, I do for you just so your vision is kept alive. It's a solemn promise to you
my dear BIG BROTHER and father. May God grant you easy passage to eternal life.
Ah, Ezomo, what an angel of a man you were; you were indeed a saint among us and I know that
the celestial Beings in the heavenly plains and even humanity recognized you so. Those of us
fortunate to encounter you closely realised much earlier that you understood very well that
economic growth and the individual development and stability stem from internal strengths,
national unity and shared common vision and purpose, and that they are not mutually exclusive.
Ezomo, you fought for that and more during your lifetime; you were a champion for the
individual’s welfare, the down trodden, the wretched of the earth.
Ah, Ezomo, you were always too eager to discover something good in everyone around you.
You always saw other people as some sort of 'injured creatures' whom you must get involved in
their healing. You taught us to face the world boldly, constantly reminding us that only the brave
and courageous win the battle of life.
It is a tragedy that such a one as DAAR has passed on; leaving everyone else in shock and
disbelief, the majority of us still groping in the dark about the death of our very amiable
chairman emeritus, founder, father and benefactor.
DAAR, you truly knew the secrets of living upright with God and the people around you. You paid
attention to everybody and everything.
The most amazing aspect of DAAR's earthly life was that he gave the same intensify, care, love,
and devotion to people who sought his assistance in one way or the other. His unparalleled
devotion to the lives of other people, especially to my career development, made me to believe
in him and therefore, alligned myself to his vision, despite all else.
My high chief, you were so engaging and jovial, never getting through a conversation without
gifting a word of advice and encouragement.
I still remember once when I’d come calling on your home-office in one of those my not-too-
frequent visits, you’d wondered why I was not getting serious attention to my lingering health
challenge; you'd given me some pep talks and reminded me of the futility of seeking for help
from outside God who alone is man’s best help in times of need. You prayed for me to heal faster
and permanently.
I deeply appreciate all those your spirited interventions all through this period of my Spinal
columns ordeal.
Thank you sir, my own saint now out of bondage of this earth plane.
It's true, you never gave up on me despite all else since I encountered you in 2001.
You were always a father, a friend, a mentor, a benefactor, a trusted BIG BROTHER, one who
disliked people who relentlessly seek for other people’s downfall when the very life we live is
short and transient.
The last time I saw you in the office, you’d looked me in the face and smiled that your captivating
and bewitching smile, always pregnant with godly feelings and good wishes; and you even joked
about my walking stick even as you brandished your own: "Oga, I don join your group of walking
stick carriers."
Ah, eeeramaaaah, it's difficult to believe that you’re gone?!!
Oh, ARABA, why didn’t you confide in me or in all those who genuinely love you as I do?
Certainly, we would have interceded with God the great Potter on your behalf. But, in your
characteristic bold manner, you romanced the Grim Reaper alone.
Oh, only God knows what happened on that afternoon of Monday May 29, 2023, and you’re out
of this life bondage to everything earthly.
I remember that date as it was that day; the sun rose above us in its usual effulgence,
brightening the sky over the Eagles Square in Abuja where dignitaries from far and near had
converged to witness the inauguration of the 16th President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The
entire Federal Capital Territory wore vivid radiant glory. Nature itself had been most generous as
it surprised the territory with a light rainfall earlier that day but little did we know that it had
other surprises for us. Nature took you away, our BIG BROTHER from another mother, High Chief
Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi!
Ah, it's difficult to come terms with the fact that you are now no more with us; certainly I have
been through this route dozens of times ( lost my both parents long ago and even so many loved
ones), but I have never been so weared down by their deaths
Beyond the the portals of friendship and family ties, you were renowned for your charity and
philanthropy.
Your benevolence, humanitarianism and love span the breadth of human existence. You remain
my own idea of an angel because you gave your children and everyone else a reason or reasons
to hope.
For me, your death is a sudden and violent transition from earthly existence into a realm which
most of us alive on the earth plane hardly ever devout time to ponder over.
Personally, this is a grieving moment and a solemn period for millions of your admirers across the
globe. I wish I know what to do to bring you back! Your exit is painful and hurtful but, what can
we do? Death is the natural course of man’s life, the way of all mortals.
Your earthly life remains a labour of hope for humanity, your death a reminder of the frailty of
man and the brevity of earthly life.
Though we mourn you today, our beloved Engineer, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, yet will we continue
to celebrate you because you remain for me, and I’m sure millions of your well wishers, the
symbol of unyielding, heroic political activism, the signification of populist democracy, blighting
and in the purity of your conviction, unshaken till the intervening might of fate.
Your death certainly cannot be the end of the story, your dream, your vision; maybe just a new
chapter, a new beginning, a total refocusing of energy and resources by we who are your assets. I
will always hold very dear to heart your philosophies of life which include human capital
development, respect for all human dignity, benevolent and philanthropic leadership.
We will continue to behold DAAR in the emblems of kindness to the deprived and despairing, in
the selfless salvage of the denied and oppressed, in the bold, unfurled banner of progressive
democratic largeness of Nigeria.
Your generosity spoke the language of everybody; always looking for ways to improve and add
value to people's lives.
Today, most people remember the great Araba as a man of intense love, humility, integrity, with
a totally untainted reputation for equity, fairness and justice; a highly detribalized, disciplined
marine engineer and a charismatic local investor who in spite of the vicissitudes of Nigeria’s
economy retained the confidences of his business associates, employees and bankers.
I miss you today and will miss you more tomorrow; the degree of my pain over your passage
continues to grow in intensity.
I just think that, today, as we mourn amid subdued celebration, a man who lived a most fulfilled
life, the greatest honour we can give to the late great son of Edo, an industrialist, a trailblazer in
private broadcasting and a patriot, is to pick up the threads of the ideals High Chief Raymond
Aleogho Anthony Dokpesi stood for, weave them to redefine ourselves and our country Nigeria:
while he yet lived, populist democracy, love and respect for all satisfied DAAR and they will
definitely gratify his soul even in death.
You gave your all to humanity, you used your time and resources for the advancement of all
people and in the service of your creator.
I'm particularly comforted by the knowledge that you are resting peacefully in the bosom of the
Lord but, the swiftness of your death has left me and millions of others in shock and devastation.
It's sad to recall that death, the last bus stop in our earthly expedition, has abbreviated Ezomo's
journey but
I am consoled by the words of a certain THOMAS MOORE that, "All that's brightest must fade,
the brightest still the fleetest: all that's sweetest was made but to lost when sweetest."
High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, you remain a great man even in death. "In the end, it's not
the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years," Abraham Lincoln, a former President
of the United States of America said a long time ago.
It's well my BIG BROTHER DAAR. This world is not our home after all and, always the bell of death
tolls for every living flesh. We thank God whom we cannot fight nor even dare to question for
the good life that you lived.
We celebrate you because you passed through a turbulent childhood to became the
Handkerchief that wiped the agonizing tears and sweats of sorrow away from the faces of
millions of people across the world.
Your departure hurts but who owns your soul has called you home: our creator is God the Lord
of all the seed-time and the harvest.
Certainly, a personage as DAAR cannot die. Aleogho Dokpesi cannot be entombed in some
concrete banishment, eclipsed from edifying memory. Impossible! The DAAR that I have known
since 2001 can neither die nor will he ever be forgotten because he will continue to live on our
lips, in our hearts, in our everyday lives; his marshalling of entrepreneurial and political struggles
will never die, the ethical writ of his oracular effulgence will forever blaze, beyond the grave.
Our own DAAR will forever remain in the cosmic latitude, girding the dithering of the political
trenches, intensifying the unstable walk, tutoring, motivating, stamped in didactic radiance.
The God who led His people through the parted sea, and from Egyptian bondage, set his children
free is the God to whom I pray for the sustenance of your legacies and grant you eternal rest in
Heaven.
You were a warrior for humanity and God.
Adieu our dear Ezomo,
Rest on our dear Araba,
Eeeraaamaa, I think the world of you!!
Itaaaa, okhiako oooooo!!!!

EZOMO; THE UNCOMMON PERSONALITY!
My heart is broken!
I feel shattered at your sudden demise.
I don't know how to embrace the sad reality.
I never thought a time like this will come so soon when I won’t be able to see you anymore.
I've lost a Father, a Friend, A Boss like no other. An uncommon human being with uncommon
capacity. I still can’t process your death.
I'll surely miss you and I hope you are happy wherever you are.
No matter what, you will always be in my heart.
There are many people in the world but it's very rare to find someone like you. God knows best!
Life goes on! But one thing remains constant; the memory of you in my heart!
I’ll try my best to return to my usual life, but it will be really tough without you. Whatever
happens, you will forever stay in my heart.
If you are looking at me from up in heaven, I want you to know that I’m not okay without you.
Thanks for giving us all a platform and opportunity to explore and excel.
To me, you were the best employer of all time. Maybe this is the reason why the pain of losing
you is just too heavy to carry! I never got a chance to say this to you but I'm sure the whole world
can testify on this.
You were my biggest fan and my greatest role model. I could call you at any time and you'd
always have a solution to my problem. Life is different without you, but I am grateful I got to call
you Dad.
You were a jokester and you made us all laugh! You taught me NOT to take life too seriously! You
were always in good spirit even until you departed this sinful world
You were the most courageous and resourceful man I known. You believed in the power of
connection and valued friendships as much as your family.
The honor of your legacy shall be a platform to bring together all those whose lives you touched.
May we find comfort and strength in the Lord during this difficult time, and continue to cherish
the memories of a wonderful man who will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Dear Dad, you're a success who lived well, laughed often and loved much; you gained the respect
of intelligent men and the love of everyone; you filled in your niche and accomplished your task;
you looked for the best in others and gave the best you had; you left me better than you met
me!
It hurts to know that you're not here anymore. I can’t help but smile with tears in my eyes to
think of how much you helped me and every moment you came through for me.
Dear Dad, you're a great soul and a great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.
There’s a Special place In my Heart for you!
There’s a special kind of feeling when I think about you. It’s a pleasure to remember all the
happy times we had!
I called you Dad, and Dad you were to me! Go well Dad, rest in peace till we meet at Jesus'feet.
Missing You Forever!
Loving You Eternally!
Thanking God In All.
Adieu dear EZOMO.
Yours truly;
Marcelina Ozekhome
HIGH CHIEF (ENGR) RAYMOND ALEOGHO DOKPESI
AN ACCOMPLISHED AFRICA ICON.
A GREAT MAN BY ALL INDECES.
We're deeply painned by his separation. The News of his demise hit us really hard; It was a rude
shock & devastated.
It's sad that we have had to lose him at this stage.
His uncommon courage to think out of the box opened the door to Private Media Explosion.
High Chief Raymond can be simply described as the bulb lighter of Private Broadcasting Industry
in Nigeria.
Now there's something interesting about High Chief Alegho Dokpesi; his detribilized spirit scent
to HEAVEN.
May those in a position of authority take a page from his life.
History will be kind to him!
Our heart & prayer are with the family. May the Almighty strengthen & comfort them & DAAR
Mgt/ Staff
May the gentle soul of the departed High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi find perfect rest in the
bosom of his creator. The good Lord uphold, strengthen, console the immediate and extended
family members, friends, business partners, entire organisation, and make love and peace to
reign supreme for his legacy to live on and the name of God Almighty glorified.
Tribute To Worldwide Ezomo
In the next few hours, it will be dust to dust. I still can't believe it. But reality is beginning to dawn
on me. I remember the last encounter with you. I had accompanied your sister, my mother in-
law to your bedroom She had come to ginger you out of your sick bed. I saw the lion, Ezomo
himself lay on his bed. Your posture made me know all may not be well. But in few minutes you
sprang up and met the rest of us at the Gazebo. I saw the athletism of a 35year old man and not
the ill 71years old between the Glass House and the Gazebo. So all was not well at that time?...
The rude shock of May 29 is yet to crystallise in my thought. But we take solace in the life you
lived- a life of service to humanity. I am very confident that your soul rests in the bosom of the
Lord. Adieu father of all. The family you left behind has no reason to fear because

Dokpesi: The big masquerade leaves the stage
By Okhiria Agbonsuremi
My first encounter with Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi was in 1994 when he graciously gave
me an opportunity to move over to his new radio station, Raypower FM, Lagos, as a Stringer,
following the closure of Rutam House and the proscription of The Guardian Newspapers Group,
where I worked as a reporter.
The then Director of News, Ladi Lawal, of blessed memory, had accepted the recommendation of
Kelly Elisha, my senior colleague on the judiciary beat, for me to be considered on the list of
“distressed journalists” of the 18 media organizations shut down by iron man, General Sani
Abacha.
The following 25 years were packed with a stretch of professional accomplishments I derived
through the massive and, arguably, the most influential broadcast group in Nigeria supervised
directly by this colossus.
You can’t work closely with High Chief without being infected by his passion for hard work.
He was a leader who had unique relationships with each one who worked with him. Everyone
had an incredible positive encounter with this Superman.
He taught us not to take a no for an answer. We knew through him and the late GMD, Ladi Lawal
(whom he said understood his vision more than any other person), not to postpone, till later or
tomorrow, any duty that can be performed today.
He was a workaholic.
High Chief Raymond Dokpesi had a character typical to many highly cerebral and intelligent
individuals. I call it “Intelligence Malaise “ – the Propensity of brilliant individuals to want to stay
guiding and supervising all tasks to be performed. They always want to do it here and now by
themselves and in their presence or under their supervision.
We saw him at sites with headpans carrying concrete mix on his head in Alagbado, and he was
physically at the outside broadcast locations with the teams to ensure everything ran smoothly
at the beginning of AIT.
He was a restless leader who craved perfection in all assignments.
Though “a bloody (marine) engineer,” as he would often refer to himself, he owned the original
concepts of many programmes on radio and television. Anytime he calls the news and
programmes management teams for a meeting, it is always certain that it would be an ideation
meeting over a programme concept. He was the quality control person behind major
programmes on the air.
His relationship with staff was more than that of a worker and an owner of the business. He gave
everyone the opportunity of access to him.
High Chief was a very informal person, and he could have a meeting with staff on very serious
assignments on the spot at any time. Oftentimes, he moves to our offices for meetings. He
believes in positive results. He loves you extra if you are result-oriented.
I had a very close and personal relationship with him.
Perhaps he concluded that I took this relationship for granted in my push to get things done
correctly. And when I told him during a meeting with top management staff to get serious about
how he runs DAAR, he fired me from the company. It was the second time I accused him of
unseriousness within two weeks. I was tired of the work environment made toxic by the
unwillingness of management to attend to the legitimate needs of staff, including payment of
salaries.
The audacity was loud, but I owed him the truth. He knew I was very vocal, and he tolerated me
for years, but this time, I drew out his anger, and he gave me the boots.
That was in February 2018, when staff morale was very low, with a backlog of several months of
salaries.
I knew it was a hard one, but I also knew it would take a friend to tell him the truth. The outcome
was, expectedly, disastrous for our warm and cordial relationship. It was the wrong cap on a
blossoming friendship of over 25 years.
During these years, I had phenomenal professional growth and exposure due to his uncommon
love, care and support.
For our outspoken and bold interventions in the handling of political programs on the air, we
needed his support to do our job well. He gave us support without interfering with the content.
“You will not even spare my friends,” he once told me.
“Chairman, tell your friends to stay on the path of honour,” I responded. And he offered me a
handshake, with both of us laughing loud.
There were three occasions he singled me out for unqualified favour. I will tell just one of them.
Sometimes in 1996, just before AIT was launched, and barely a year after I was formally
integrated as a staff of DAAR, the newsroom management decided to reorganize operations.
I was Head Reportorial, despite my junior-level position in the newsroom. This supervisory
position was artificial because I never really supervised senior reporters. There were senior
colleagues supervising all of us. Still, I was experienced enough to put their reports together for
Raypower’s flagship news magazine program in the afternoon, Metro Despatch.
The proposal before him from the newsroom management was, among others, to replace me as
Head Reportorial with another very hardworking and experienced colleague from the Concord
Stable, Bayo Adeyinka.
He sighted me in the premises through his glass office, opened the window and called my
attention. I rushed up to his office, where he told me that I was being replaced as Head,
Reportorial and requested to know what the problem was.
I told him nothing was wrong, and he asked me to go.
It was the first time I entered his office alone, besides the few occasions I attended meetings
with others.
But he had met me in the newsroom on many occasions working alone in the dead of the night
when I faced the task of preparing reports for “CASE FILE,” a segment of judicial reports on the
Ultimate Morning Show (UMS). On each occasion, he would bang on the Newsroom door, and
when I opened the door, he would give me jovial salutations and move on to his regular night
inspections of the offices and the live studio.
I was still thinking of the information he gave me in his office when he came to the newsroom.
Unknown to me, he had his plans.
He came into the newsroom with approvals for all the recommended appointments, including
my removal.
But he looked up to everyone and asked jokingly what they now wanted to do with “this man,”
pointing in my direction.
Before anyone could answer, he announced that because of the transition program by the
military and the emerging political development towards civil rule, he was recommending the
setting up of the Political Desk.
He also immediately announced that, based on my experience, having studied my file, I was best
suited to head and nurture that desk. He also elevated me to Assistant Manager, jumping three
ranks above my peers.
From Assistant Manager, Political Desk, I rose through the ranks in over 20 years to the group’s
Director in charge of Politics. I served as the Director of AIT Parliamentary Channel on DAARSat,
the still-born Direct Broadcast Satellite Services of DAAR Plc.
High Chief Raymond Dokpesi stood by me like a rock to succeed in my office, helping me with
contacts, resources and ideas.
He approved my posting to the Presidential Villa as a State House correspondent in 1999. He
sent me to Portharcourt as Assistant General Manager/Bureau Chief to run two radio stations –
Raypower 1 and 2 – and AIT, the TV station. I had pieces of training at BBC in London and at
Cologn and Berlin at Deutsche Welle, Germany.
High Chief Dokpesi watched over our shoulders and protected some of us from being eliminated
by military agents during the dark Abacha days. The “NADECO 2” in the newsroom – Adebayo
Bodunrin and I (we were political reporters, and we were tagged supporters of the National
Democratic Coalition) regularly came under threat because of our work. Still, Chairman would
ask us to go under until we were safe again. Ambrose Somide, though not in the newsroom, was
also under the same threat because of his voice on radio.
After I was sent on “Compulsory Retirement,” I wrote a letter of appreciation to him, thanking
him for my opportunity to use his media platforms to blossom in my broadcast and journalism
career. He didn’t acknowledge my letter.
Before I left for Canada in 2020 to stay with my ailing wife, I also visited him with a bottle of
champagne and wines along with Dr. Adaobi Obiabunmuo, Program Manager at PRIMORG, to
renew my loyalty and appreciation to him despite the manner of my departure from DAAR. It
was my little way to say “thank you” to this great man who provided me with the platform and
unqualified friendship for my 25 years in the broadcast arena.
Recently, I sensed that something was wrong somehow when the High Chief sent a message to
me through a comment on my Facebook page to commiserate with me upon the passing of my
wife, Mercy. He didn’t call or send a text message to my phone. I was curious but delighted to
hear from him.
He disclosed that he got the news when his “health was very bad.” That line got me worried.
He wrote:
“Austin,
Tosin called to inform me about the passage of your wife at a time when my health was very bad.
We prayed for her and you with the surviving children. Be very strong as we pray that her soul
should rest in perfect peace and perpetual light shine on her soul. May God grant you and the
family the fortitude and grace to bear this irreparable loss at a time she is most needed. Be
strong Austin. Take consolation in the fact that she fought a good fight, and you stood by her till
the last minute. God bless you and all the kids you now have to father & mother.”
I responded:
“Thank you, my chairman, for your prayers and valuable counsel. May God strengthen you and
grant you good health.”
I contacted his wife, Madam Tosin, immediately, and she assured me he was fine and abiding by
the Doctor’s instructions.
I was earnestly looking forward to visiting him anytime I visit Nigeria.
No matter what you think or say about him, Chairman, as we called him, positively impacted so
much on everyone within his spheres.
I was privileged to have an exceptional relationship with him. I was one of the few staff who
exercised the opportunity to get to his bedroom whenever I needed to see him urgently, even
when he was resting.
He told me: “If it’s urgent and I am sleeping, wake me up.”
As Director in charge of the Political Desk, I got tips and updates regularly from him because he
was always a step ahead no matter how much I tried to get atop political information.
Writing about a life encounter with Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi is like writing about the
good dance of a masquerade after watching from the sidelines. What you write is what you can
see from your corner of the big circle.
And when the masquerade has thrilled everyone, a benevolent writer will not bother writing
about the wrong steps and momentary falls.
My chairman was a big masquerade. He had his adventures, controversial steps and style, which
cannot diminish his towering successes and accomplishments.
As a big masquerade, he thrilled everyone. He had his head well above his peers.
His departure leaves a big vacuum in the Nigerian media space that will be difficult to fill.

As you journey home today, we ask God to bless your soul and forgive all your sins on earth.
Farewell and goodnight EZOMO ALEOGHO DOKPESI.
Paul Osimeh is your fan
